FineSoccer Kids Newsletter 63 Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter. Today’s subject deals with defensively preventing the player with the ball from creating dangerous situations. In most cases, an attacking player is able to create a dangerous situation as soon as the first defender makes a mistake and stabs at the ball (for more on the role of the first defender, please go to http://finesoccer.com/edition76.htm). Since this is the case, the way to prevent the attacker from creating a dangerous situation is simply for the first defender NOT to stab at the ball. If you look at the Soccer Newsletter on moves (which can be found at http://finesoccer.com/soccer_edition_56.htm), they are almost all designed either to react to a stab or to create a stab. Knowing this, you should quickly be able to understand that if the first defender doesn’t stab, the moves (or feints) done by most attackers become useless. Defenders who are patient will usually force the attacker to do one of two things. Either the attacker will try to force something that is not there and give the ball up to the defender who only has to do an easy tackle or she will pass the ball off to a teammate once she realizes she can’t go anywhere. Either way, the defender wins. Disciplined defenders who don’t stab are becoming rarer and rarer to find and if some of your teammates have a tendency to stab, the way to help them is to become effective second defenders and keep reminding them not to stab when you see a situation where they might want to stab (for more on the role of the second defender, please go to http://finesoccer.com/soccer_edition_133.htm) . This topic is something that is very easy to talk about or write about but it takes concentration and discipline in order to execute. Those players who learn not to stab are the ones that become better players. Any questions, comments or suggestions should be sent to Lawrence@finesoccer.com or they can be posted on the FineSoccer Forum at http://finesoccer.net To subscribe to any of the FineSoccer Newsletters, please go to http://finesoccer.com/subscrib.htm Have a great day!
